Theodore Finch is fascinated by death, and he constantly thinks of ways he might kill himself. But each time, something good, no matter how small, stops him.
Violet Markey lives for the future, counting the days until graduation, when she can escape her Indiana town and her aching grief in the wake of her sister’s recent death.
When Finch and Violet meet on the ledge of the bell tower at school, it’s unclear who saves whom. And when they pair up on a project to discover the “natural wonders” of their state, both Finch and Violet make more important discoveries: It’s only with Violet that Finch can be himself—a weird, funny, live-out-loud guy who’s not such a freak after all. And it’s only with Finch that Violet can forget to count away the days and start living them. But as Violet’s world grows, Finch’s begins to shrink.
This is an intense, gripping novel perfect for fans of Jay Asher, Rainbow Rowell, John Green, Gayle Forman, and Jenny Downham from a talented new voice in YA, Jennifer Niven.url

  • How did you come up with the idea of your first YA book?
Years ago, I knew and loved a boy, and that boy was bipolar. I witnessed up-close the highs and lows, the Awake and the Asleep, and I saw his daily struggle with the world and with himself. The experience was life changing, and I decided to write about it.
  • How long did it take you to finish the book?
The first draft took six weeks to write! (Which makes it the fastest book I’ve ever written!)
  • What’s your favorite YA book (aside from yours, of course) ? ♥
I love Speak by Laurie Halse Anderson, but I’ll always have a soft spot for Forever by Judy Blume.
  • How young are you? =)) p.s. I LOVE YOUR RED LIPS. (even tho i’m not wearing lipstick, hihi)
I’m a wee bit older than 40, but will always be 15 in my heart. J
  • Do you have a pet? If yes, what’s his/her name?
I have three cats—Lulu, Rumi, and Scout.
  • Are you working on another project? =))
Yes! I’m writing my second YA novel, which is about a boy who can’t recognize faces and a very visible girl who feels invisible.
  • (I’M FEELING GIDDY RIGHT NOW OHMYGOD) Are you planning to go here in the PH? ♥
I would LOVE to come to the PH! I’m not scheduled to as of right now, but I am hoping it will happen!
  • When will be the publishing date of your next book?
I’m not sure yet, but most likely next year.
  • I hope I could hug you right now because you’re so kind to your fans and you’re so lovable!
I am sending giant hugs to all my PH readers. I love you all so much and hope to meet you in person one day!

AUTHOR Q&A – INES BAUTISTA-YAO

First ever FILIpino author that i interviewed.

5359512 Only A Kiss CoverSynopsis of her book from Goodreads:

(Source: https://www.goodreads.com/book/show/23705867-only-a-kiss?from_search=true )

When she was nine-years-old, Katie knew she wanted Chris to give her her first kiss. It wasn’t because she was in love with him (no way, he was her best friend! Besides, she was in love with his fourteen-year-old big brother), it was because she could make him do anything she wanted.
Besides, it didn’t really mean anything. It was only a kiss after all.
But then things started to change. They grew up. They parted ways and went to different high schools. And other girls and boys—well, just one particular boy—came into the picture, throwing their lives upside down.
Told from the alternating points of view of Katie and Chris, this love story between two best friends will tug at your heartstrings and leave you thinking how the simplest things can mean so much.url

  • Where did you get the idea of your books? Did it come from your experiences, observations, unexpressed feelings? or what?
Hi, Jasmine! Thank you for interviewing me! My ideas come from what I notice and see around me, whatever enters my head when I’m driving or in the shower, what I think of when I’m listening to a song or seeing a group of people that catch my eye, ideas that spring to mind as I’m talking to my best friends and family—basically anything that comes into contact with me. I don’t base my stories on my life because that would boring. I write so that I can make up fun, interesting, and what I perceive to be really cool stuff. Maybe I’ll use something I experienced but I will exaggerate it or blow it up a little bit just so I can take it from ordinary to fascinating.
  • What’s your motto in life?
I believe that you can do anything you set your heart on and the first step is to believe in yourself.
  • How would you define the words “true friendship”?
True friendship happens when two people care about each other more than they do about themselves. They look out for each other, worry about each other, and have each other’s best interests at heart. True friendship is when you love each other and love spending time together, having fun and also being there during the difficult times. It stands the test of time and the test of other people who make life more interesting, so to speak.
  • How would you describe your book to new fans?
If you’re looking for a sweet, romantic story about best friends who have grown up together, this is the book for you! Haha! Sounds like an ad. But really, Only A Kiss is a love story about Katie and Chris, two childhood best friends. It is told from both their points of view and shows how they grow in life and in love. And it’s got loads of feels and kilig!
  • Are you working on another project?
Yes! Several haha! I think I may be in over my head.
  • If yes, give me one word that best describes it.
Ambitious.

ISN’T IT LOVELY WHEN YOU’VE FOUND YOUR SPECIAL SOMEONE WHEN YOU’RE NOT LOOKING FOR HIM/HER?
THIS BOOK HAS BEEN AND IS STILL ONE OF THE MOST TALKED ABOUT BOOKS OF THE YEAR. I GOT REALLY CURIOUS ABOUT THIS SO I LOOKED IT UP IN OUR LOCAL BOOKSTORE. AND WOAH! IT’S COMPARED TO TFIOS & ELEANOR & PARK ( MY TWO FAVES ).
anigif_enhanced-buzz-15610-1424733280-14
FROM THE BEGINNING OF THE STORY, I’VE ALREADY LOVED FINCH! I DON’T KNOW WHY BUT HE ALREADY CAPTIVATED MY HEART. HE IS REALLY ROMANTIC – INNOCENTLY ROMANTIC – AND HE’S VERY CARING. EVEN THOUGH HE WAS FASCINATED BY DEATH / SUICIDE / ANY OTHER WAYS TO KILL HIMSELF, HE HAS A HEART.
I LOVED THE STORY EVEN BETTER WHEN HE MET ULTRAVIOLET / VIOLET! NOW, SHE’S ONE OF THE REASONS OR MOST PROBABLY THE WHOLE REASON WHY HE STILL WANTS TO LIVE EVERY SINGLE DAY.
“NOT ALL THOSE WHO WANDER ARE LOST” AND ONE OF THEM IS FINCH. HE WAS NEVER LOST WHEN HE’S WITH VIOLET.
EVERY PLACE = NEW ADVENTURE
NEW ADVENTURE = VERY MEANINGFUL
USING THE TRANSITIVE PROPERTY IN MATHEMATICS, EVERY PLACE IS VERY MEANINGFUL TO THEM.

gif all the feelings

TEENAGERS SUFFER FROM DIFFERENT KINDS OF PROBLEMS. IT’S ALL UP TO US ON HOW TO COPE WITH THEM. BUT I’M PRETTY SURE OF ONE THING, THERE’S ALWAYS A SOLUTION FOR THAT.
APPRECIATION & ACCEPTANCE. THESE WORDS ARE WHAT WE NEED. EVERYDAY, WE HAVE DIFFERENT EXPERIENCES & DIFFERENT LESSONS.
WE MUST BE THANKFUL BECAUSE WITHOUT THESE EXPERIENCES, WE CAN’T GAIN LESSONS FROM THEM.
ANOTHER LESSON THAT THIS BOOK GAVE ME IS THAT WE MUST TREASURE OUR MEMORIES WITH SOMEONE WE LOVE & HATE. EVERY MOMENT WILL LAST FOREVER.
THEODORE FINCH & VIOLET MARKEY WILL LAST IN MY HEART.

(SOURCE: https://www.goodreads.com/book/show/18336965-my-heart-and-other-black-holes?from_search=true )

Sixteen-year-old physics nerd Aysel is obsessed with plotting her own death. With a mother who can barely look at her without wincing, classmates who whisper behind her back, and a father whose violent crime rocked her small town, Aysel is ready to turn her potential energy into nothingness.
There’s only one problem: she’s not sure she has the courage to do it alone. But once she discovers a website with a section called Suicide Partners, Aysel’s convinced she’s found her solution: a teen boy with the username FrozenRobot (aka Roman) who’s haunted by a family tragedy is looking for a partner.
Even though Aysel and Roman have nothing in common, they slowly start to fill in each other’s broken lives. But as their suicide pact becomes more concrete, Aysel begins to question whether she really wants to go through with it. Ultimately, she must choose between wanting to die or trying to convince Roman to live so they can discover the potential of their energy together. Except that Roman may not be so easy to convince.url

  • Where did the idea of My Heart and Other Black Holes come from? Are they from experiences or observations?
I started to write the book after the death of one of my closest friends and my grief served as chief inspiration. But while the novel stemmed from grief, I think the book is really about love (in all its forms, especially self-love) and the importance of human connection.
  • Who’s your inspiration when you’re writing your book?
Usually my main character. I write from voice, so I try to channel my main character’s voice and that’s how I find the story. That said, sometimes my main characters are inspired by people. For example, in the project I’m working on now, I’m drawing a lot of inspiration from Mindy Kaling.
  • How would you define your true friends?
People who I can be 100% myself with and 100% honest with. Also, people who send me cat gifs.
  • What’s your favorite book? ( I know it’s very difficult to choose one.)
Weetzie Bat is probably my favorite YA book ever as it’s the YA book I read as a teenager that made me want to write similar novels of my own. I also love all of Jandy Nelson’s books, and Margaret Atwood’s The Blind Assassin might be the most perfect novel ever written.
  • Are you planning to go here in the PH?
I wish!! I really want to visit. While on tour in the US, I was talking with Victoria Aveyard about how fun it would be to visit the PH. Invite us both?
  • Are working on another project?
Yes! I’m under contract with Harper for a second YA novel.
  • If yes, when will be the expected publication?
Yikes. I think 2016 if I can make my deadline.
