Words are strong. Love is stronger.
When Jordyn Michaelson’s autistic brother joins her at her elite school, she’s determined not to let anyone know they’re related. Even if that means closing herself off to all her closest friends, including charming football stud Alex Colby. But despite her best intentions, she just can’t shake the memory of kissing Alex last summer, and the desire to do it again.
Can Jordyn find the courage to tell Alex how she really feels—and the truth about her family—before he slips away forever?

  • Aside from writing, what keeps you busy?
My kids!  I have a four-year-old and a toddler and they are constantly on the go.  I read a lot of picture books, do a lot of coloring, and play outside a lot.  When my husband and I get a rare free moment, we like trying new restaurants or just catching up on Netflix (The Blacklist is our current favorite show!). My other hobbies include decorating our home, digital scrapbooking, spending too much money at Target, and drinking a lot of Starbucks.
  • What’s your favorite YA novel?
Well, it straddles the line between YA/NA, but the book I probably reread the most is Rites of Spring (Break) by Diana Peterfreund, part of the Secret Society Girl series.  It has my favorite romantic pairing EVER!
  • What inspired you to write How To Say I Love You Out Loud?
I work in a school that serves students with disabilities. The family dynamic is very interesting.  A lot of the siblings have had to deal with experiences that most children/teens can’t understand.  In many instances, the siblings needs have to come second.  I started thinking about what life must be like for them, how their family situation might impact their social relationships and perspective on life in general.  I knew it would be interesting to explore and write about, and it was.
  • It has a catchy title, how did you come up with it?
I came up with it after a lot of completely un-catchy titles, haha!  Originally, I called it “Surviving Sixty” in my head, because Jordyn was just trying to survive the sixty days that Phillip would be at her school.  My writing buddy told me it sounded like a book about a sixty-year-old woman rather than YA, so I knew that had to go!  I put a lot of thought into common themes of the book, and Jordyn learning to accept and acknowledge her feelings about both Phillip and Alex was really central.  How to Say I Love You Out Loud captured the essence of both relationships.
  • Describe your book to new fans.
My main character, Jordyn, learns the hard way that keeping her brother Phillip, who has Autism, a secret is costing her the opportunity to develop meaningful relationships with her friends and Alex, the boy she’s been in love with for over a year. The story follows Jordyn on her journey as she learns to embrace her brother AND her true feelings about the other people in her life as well.
  • Are you working on another project?
Why yes I am.  🙂
  • If yes, how would you describe it?
Hmmm, I can’t say too much yet, but in a nutshell: “Because everyone deserves second chances. And everyone deserves to be loved.”
  • Are you planning to go here in the Philippines?
Currently, I don’t have any specific plans for international travel – boo!  But the Philippines is somewhere I’ve never visited, and it’s home to one of my Swoon Sisters, Kate Evangelista. So it would be a fun place to include on a trip someday.

BOOK REVIEW – LOVE FORTUNES AND OTHER DISASTERS

22718710BOOK: LOVE FORTUNES AND OTHER DISASTERS

AUTHOR: KIMBERLY KARALIUS

FORMAT / PUBLISHER: PAPERBACK / SWOON READS

Synopsis1
In the tradition of Alice Hoffman’s Practical Magic, one girl chooses to change her fortune and her fate by falling in love.
Love is real in the town of Grimbaud, and Fallon Dupree has dreamed of attending high school there for years. After all, generations of Duprees have successfully followed the (100% accurate!) love fortunes from Zita’s famous Love Charms Shop to happily marry their high school sweethearts. It’s a tradition. So she is both stunned and devastated when her fortune states that she will NEVER find love.
Fortunately, Fallon isn’t the only student with a terrible love fortune, and a rebellion is brewing. Fallon is determined to take control of her own fate—even if it means working with a notorious heartbreaker like Sebastian.
Will Fallon and Sebastian be able to overthrow Zita’s tyranny and fall in love?

Fave quotes lines
  • “I don’t want this to be the end. If I can find love somehow, some way, I want to take it.” page 32
  • “Life is about making mistakes. If you don’t take chances, blindfolded and frightened as you are, you’re not really living, are you? Heartache makes you stronger. Misery is the stuff of good poetry.” page 37
  • “There’s nothing wrong with wanting to fall in love.” page 173

book review
This book made me travel to the world of magic. The plot was unique. *I would like to tell you what it was like but it’ll become some -sort of- spoiler :(* It’s indeed a dreamy read. SO SO SO MAGICAL. IT WAS TOTALLY AN AMAZING WORLD.

Do you believe in fortune? If yes, you should read this. If no, you should still read this one too. What if your fortune told you that you won’t have a good future. Are you just going to give up?
Fallon and Sebastian. I loved the character development of these two. They supported each other to get through *something*. I loved the way it ended. THEY WERE WHAT I EXPECTED THROUGHOUT THE END. THE CONCEPT WAS SO GOOD.
If you want to escape the world of reality, then you should read this book. You’ll fall in love with this city. One of my best reads this May.
READ THIS BOOK. READ THIS BOOK. READ THIS BOOK.

BOOK REVIEW – SOLITAIRE

20618110BOOK: SOLITAIRE

AUTHOR: ALICE OSEMAN

FORMAT / PUBLISHER: PAPERBACK / HARPER COLLINS

Synopsis1
In case you’re wondering, this is not a love story.
My name is Tori Spring. I like to sleep and I like to blog. Last year – before all that stuff with Charlie and before I had to face the harsh realities of A-Levels and university applications and the fact that one day I really will have to start talking to people – I had friends. Things were very different, I guess, but that’s all over now.
Now there’s Solitaire. And Michael Holden.
I don’t know what Solitaire are trying to do, and I don’t care about Michael Holden.
I really don’t.
This incredible debut novel by outstanding young author Alice Oseman is perfect for fans of John Green, Rainbow Rowell and all unflinchingly honest writers.

book review
*I forgot to write all my favorite lines from this book because it was just extremely good that I wasn’t able to put it down. I’ll post my fave lines in the near future.*
I’m quite unsure of how to get this review started because this book was ASTOUNDING and WONDERFUL.
When I read the synopsis of this book on goodreads, I was like “OH MY GOODNESS. I NEED TO HAVE A COPY OF THIS.” And I already have it now! When I read the 1st page of this book, it intrigued me a lot and I can’t stop reading it. This book was just TOTALLY AMAZING. THIS IS THE KIND OF YA BOOK THAT I’M LOOKING FOR.
WHAT MADE ME LOVE THIS BOOK?
1. It’s REALISTIC. I felt like I’m like Tori at some point.
2. The plot was UNIQUE. A lot of YA books have been published since then but this book. Come on! This book gave me the feels without someone leaving or dying. sfsdgdshdfh :'((
3. The author wrote this book when she was 18! How cool was that?
This was an eye-opening book. IT WAS JUST FREAKING AWESOME. I love this book so so so so so much!!!!! Everything that I expected was here. Every teenager’s emotions and feels were here.
THIS BOOK WILL HAVE A SPECIAL PLACE IN MY HEART
P.S. My physical copy of this book got spine creases. 😦 I’ll take those creases as a positive sign because I really loved every pages of this book. I actually don’t want it to end.
I WOULD LIKE TO TELL YOU THAT THIS IS MY MOST FAVORITE BOOK THIS YEAR.

AUTHOR Q&A – JESSICA VERDI

jessica-verdi-225x22520933641SYNOPSIS OF HER BOOK FROM GOODREADS:

(SOURCE: https://www.goodreads.com/book/show/23418610-what-you-left-behind )

It’s all Ryden’s fault. If he hadn’t gotten Meg pregnant, she would have never stopped her chemo treatments and would still be alive. Instead, he’s failing fatherhood one dirty diaper at a time. And it’s not like he’s had time to grieve while struggling to care for their infant daughter, start his senior year, and earn the soccer scholarship he needs to go to college.
The one person who makes Ryden feel like his old self is Joni. She’s fun and energetic—and doesn’t know he has a baby. But the more time they spend together, the harder it becomes to keep his two worlds separate. Finding one of Meg’s journals only stirs up old emotions, and Ryden’s convinced Meg left other notebooks for him to find, some message to help his new life make sense. But how is he going to have a future if he can’t let go of the past?

  • ASIDE FROM WRITING, WHAT KEEPS YOU BUSY?
I love spending time with my friends, husband, and dog. I also watch a lot of TV and films, and I read a lot, of course—I love getting lost in great storytelling, no matter what form it’s in. I also love to travel whenever I can—I just got back from a trip to Thailand, where I volunteered at an elephant sanctuary!
  • ARE YOU ALSO A BOOKWORM / WIDE READER?
Yes! I love reading, whether it’s for my day job (I’m an adult romance editor), reading my YA author friends’ books, or reading something by someone I’ve never heard of before. There are so many amazing stories out there!
  • WHAT’S YOUR FAVORITE BOOK AND SERIES?
I have several favorites, for different reasons, but some books/series at the top of my list are The Catcher in the Rye by J.D. Salinger, It’s Kind of a Funny Story by Ned Vizzini, and the Mara Dyer series by Michelle Hodkin.
  • How would you define your true friends?
People who really GET who I am, and love me for it. And vice versa.
  • How did you come up with the idea of What You Left Behind?
The idea for What You Left Behind was actually sparked by an article my husband sent me about a teenage girl who had cancer and was pregnant, and wasn’t allowed to make her own decision of whether she wanted to abort her pregnancy and continue her cancer treatments, or stop the cancer treatments and have the baby. Her parents chose for her (they chose stop cancer treatments and have the baby) and she died a couple days after giving birth, leaving the baby to be raised by her boyfriend. This isn’t exactly what happens in the book, but the issue of choice is one that is very important to me, so I wanted to write about that. And of course I was completely interested in the single teen dad grieving the loss of his girlfriend story. So that’s where Ryden came from.
  • Are you planning to work on another project?
Yes, I’ve just finished another book that I actually co-wrote with an author friend of mine. I can’t say too much about that one yet, but I will say it’s more fantasy-ish than anything I’ve done before.
  • If yes, what is it all about?
I know I’m being vague here, but it’s about friendship and love and sacrifice.
  • Are you planning to go here in the PH in the future?
I would absolutely LOVE to, but unfortunately I don’t have any concrete plans for that just yet. 😦
