and finally, the most awaited part of this post….. the cover of earth’s end!!!

HOLY CHEEEEEEESE. IT LOOKS AWESOME. I only have one feeling for this cover.

A woman awoken in air, a soldier forged by fire, a weapon risen from blood.

Vhalla Yarl has made it to the warfront in the North. Forged by blood and fire, she has steeled her heart for the final battle of the Solaris Empire’s conquest. The choices before Vhalla are no longer servitude or freedom, they are servitude or death. The stakes have never been higher as the Emperor maintains his iron grip on her fate, holding everything Vhalla still has left to lose in the balance.

How did you come to work with zwxArt (Meril Chan)?

Well, when I decided to self-publish I knew the cover art would be one of the most important things about my book, and I also knew I wanted drawn artwork over photography. I, personally, feel like it’s “iconic high-fantasy” to have a painted cover and so that’s what I began searching for. Also, as an indie author, I wanted to work with someone else who wasn’t a big cover art company and perhaps was just getting their start also. So I was thumbing through DeviantArt for illustrators I liked and I found Meril.

It was the image below that made me know I needed to work with her. It was like she’d already created something that I thought captured the essence of Air Awakens, even if the visuals I wanted were completely different.

Can you explain the process from the author’s perspective? How are covers made?

Well, I can only explain in my limited experience. It’s my understanding that traditional authors get little to no control over what their covers look like. For me, I started by sending Meril what had been my query letter and a handful of scenes I pulled out from the story. I also sent her the draft manuscript in case she wanted to find how a particular scene I’d chosen to pull out fit in. I’d been told that cover artists are too busy to read their client’s work in its entirety, so I wasn’t offended by the notion of just handing her some scenes.

To my surprise, Meril read it all. Talk about knowing you made the right choice as an author! I seriously count my blessings every day for this.

So, Meril reads my draft manuscripts (she’s usually among the very first to read them before my editor) and then she begins drafting thumbnails. These are very rough, quick sketches to give me an idea of the layout. She explains a bit of each, what she sees as the inspiration and story for each cover. From there we tweak them.

Tweaking can be everything from, “What if she’s holding…” to “I like the third and fifth sketch, can you try to merge them?”

This process can take anywhere from two days to a week, depending on how long I need to stare at them and how many changes are being made.

Following that, Meril moves onto the final sketch with a bit more detail. Once we’re certain we’re on the same page with the final direction she starts rendering. As an author this stage of the process is basically magic to me. Because she transforms (granted, an already amazing rough) into an even more amazing final illustration.

When she’s close to the final she sends it to me (by this point I’ve already poked her for updates because I’m way too excited not to) and we do any last-minute editing like color changes, softening lines, or adding small details.

Once all that is done she sends me the final illustration and I do the text layout on it. And, that’s how the Air Awakens covers come to life!

What’s your favorite cover so far?

I like them all… They each have something that I think is perfect for the book they’re representing about them… I suppose, it’s a toss-up between Earth’s End and Fire Falling. Earth’s End just wows me with the background Meril created, it’s going to be a gorgeous hardcover book. There’s also a lot of teasers in there. But, Fire Falling has Aldrik on the cover, and that’s never a bad thing!

If you’re interested to know more about Meril Chan’s artworks / designs, I’ll leave her sketch for Earth’s End and you can check her blog, too! Plus, she’s also a FILIPINA! I’m so happy for her. ❤

Okay, guys. I’m still fangirling…… That cover is stunning. Pure perfection.

A lot of you have been asking me questions regarding ARCs and I finally outlined some things and tips for you.

First of all, ARC stands for Advance Reader’s Copy. ARCs are being distributed by publishers to create hype and buzz for their upcoming books. Let me just tell you something, it’s not the publisher’s obligation and responsibility to distribute ARCs to everyone. If you’re blogging because you only want to get ARCs or something like that, you’re doing it the wrong way. Trust me, you’re driving yourself to become an ARC hoarder and that’s very wrong. Okay? Okay. Also, I want to emphasize that ARCs don’t and will not describe your blogging position in the book community.

“How to get ARCs? Where do I send my request? Where can I get ARCs? Will publishers visit my blog?”

These were just some of the most common questions I’m getting from my social media accounts and I think I’m finally ready to answer them.

{ Everything you’re about to read are based on my experiences and are all my opinions. }

I’ve read some articles saying that your blog must have at least 500 followers or you’re blogging for at least six months or longer. I would agree with this, but this doesn’t mean that if you’re blogging for less than six months, you can’t request for an ARC. Some publishers visit blogs and if they’ve seen that your blog has a potential, they would agree to send you an ARC.

Whenever you’re going to send an email to a publisher, please make sure that your email is written in a formal or professional way. Start your request by introducing yourself, the place you’re living in (especially for international bloggers!), your preferred genre, and your blog (of course!). Give them the monthly stats of your blog (you can also send them a screenshot of your monthly views), the number of followers of your blog, the total number of views of your blog, and you can also send them a sample post (like a book review or something). Also, don’t forget to include your other social media accounts where you can promote their books.

Next, request the book/s you want to read and review. Include the book title and the author’s name. You can request more than one book, but don’t request everything. P.S. DON’T EVER REQUEST FOR BOOKS THAT YOU WON’T READ AND REVIEW. ARCs are not free. Publishers are paying for them, too.

Don’t forget to send them your shipping information, too. Send them your full name, mailing address, and your contact number. It would be easier for them to send you a copy if you’ve already sent them your information.

In my case, I’m requesting ARCs 2-4 months before the release of the actual book. Why? I want to be ready with my book review before the release of the book. Please keep in mind that ARCs are different from the actual book. There will still be revisions and editing needed before the release of the book.

And now….. let me share the email addresses of these publishers! Some of these email addresses are specifically for YA and children’s books. (International bloggers, please ask the publishers if they’re sending ARCs internationally.)

  • HMH KIDS: |
  • PENGUIN: Please fill out the Blogger Request Form then proceed to the Galley Request Form.

Please take note that it may take some time before the publishers reply to your email. They’re receiving tons of requests everyday. Also, sending an email doesn’t assure that you’ll be having a copy in your mail.

These are the following scenarios that may (or may not) happen when you finally sent them an email.

  • You’ll receive a reply saying that they’ve granted your request and they’ll send you a copy.
  • You’ll receive a reply saying that they’ve declined your request.
  • You’ll not receive a reply, but you’re going to receive a copy.
  • You’ll not receive a reply and you’re not going to receive a copy.

I hope this post helps you and your blog. If you still have some questions, please leave a comment down below. Also, if I made some mistakes (especially with the email addresses), please let me know.

Let me cut this short (just kidding!). This sequel SLAYED it. You’re about to read how Jasmine loves fantasy (and the Air Awakens series) now!

Okay, if you don’t know yet, I’m not used to reading fantasy books. Also, I’m not used to reading 3rd POV. This book got me out of my comfort zone, to be honest with you. I learned to love fantasy novels when I started reading Air Awakens. A few months ago, I was part of the blog tour for Air Awakens and I didn’t expect that I would really love the book. I didn’t expect that that moment would have a huge impact in my reading life. Everything turned different. I now have a huge amazement for fantasy books. I can now say, “I want to read more FANTASY novels!”.

Most favorite characters? VHALLA and LAREL. Their friendship is friendship goals. Their friendship is a must-have. I adore these characters SO much. They’ve shown the real meaning of true friendship from the first book throughout the second book. Fact: It doesn’t mean that if you have a lot of friends, all of them are your true friends. It also doesn’t mean that if you only have one friend, you’re a loser. That one friend might be your only true friend. It’s way better than having a lot of fake friends, just saying! Another favorite character of mine was PRINCE ALDRIK. Okay, guys. I was squealing for half an hour because of him. He’s so sweet and charming and OHMYGOSH *I can’t breathe* AAHHHH. Swoon-worthy. *winks*

Uhm… Obviously, Fire Falling was more heart-stopping (?). This book was impeccable and exemplary. Vhalla Yarl was simply a library apprentice during the first book. If you’ve read Fire Falling, you know how different she became and how inspiring she was. This book was full of action-packed scenes that will leave you hanging (and not breathing). While I was reading this, I had a bottle of water ready by my side in case I can’t stand to get some water in the refrigerator, and I’m glad I had it beside me. There’s no way this book will let you take a break. Every chapter will leave you, “What the fuck did just happen? I NEED TO READ THE NEXT CHAPTER NOW”. The twists became more intense and mind-blowing that you can forget about the real world. Dead serious, guys. It was a fucking rollercoaster ride full of feelings and unanswered questions. Also, the ending blew me away. Oh gosh. I NEED THE 3RD BOOK NOW. I NEED EARTH’S END NOW!!! I won’t be surprised if Elise Kova will become my author of the year. (I think she is right now!)

Also, I would be very happy if this series will become a TV series or a film. It was such an incredible read!

The Lies About Truth

Sadie Kingston, is a girl living in the aftermath. A year after surviving a car accident that killed her friend Trent and left her body and face scarred, she can’t move forward. The only person who seems to understand her is Trent’s brother, Max.

As Sadie begins to fall for Max, she’s unsure if she is truly healed enough to be with him — even if Max is able to look at her scars and not shy away. But when the truth about the accident and subsequent events comes to light, Sadie has to decide if she can embrace the future or if she’ll always be trapped in the past.

*I would like to thank HARPER COLLINS INTERNATIONAL for sending me an ARC copy of this book. This doesn’t affect nor influence my review.*

Do you know that feeling when you finished reading a book and you were like, “What did I just read? What the f*ck did just happen to my feelings?” I felt this right after I finished reading The Lies About Truth.

I assure you that this novel will make you feel enthralled and will leave you astounded. Oh gosh. If you must know, I love novels about friendship. Whenever I browse for books, I always search for friendship-related novels. Romance is a plus point, but FRIENDSHIP is my thing. I just don’t get inspired by the characters, but I can also relate to them.

Sadie. She survived a car accident. She got traumatized after that incident. She always had second thoughts if she’ll do this or that. Until she met Max….. She’s just unsure of what will happen in the future.

Max. His brother, Trent, died in a car accident where Sadie survived. Max did his best to be with Sadie…..

The thing that will really remind me about this book is the friendship circle. Sometimes, friends fight for each other. Sometimes, friends fight each other. Come on, there’s no such thing as a perfect friendship but it’ll all come down to this – true friendship will last forever. Sometimes, me and my friends have a misunderstanding but we’re still one (or at least I still consider them as my friends). Another fact, whenever you’re having a fight with your friend, there’s no way you can hold the feeling of being angry at him/her for a very long time. There will always come a point wherein one of you would give up and smile and say hi to the other person….. unless you have a stone-ish heart. I’m always like this. I always end up smiling at him/her because I really don’t want a fight. I don’t want to have harsh feelings for somebody.

This was my first Stevens’ novel and let me just say that she NAILED it. She’s such an AMAZING author. I would like to read more from her. She and her book deserve 5 GLITTERING stars. No words can explain how I felt while I was reading her book. Gosh, it was SO good. I RECOMMEND this to EVERYONE!

P.S. I also made a printable bookmark, just so you know. You can download it. 🙂

Ashley Herring Blake

If you missed my earlier post about the S.F.D., here is a recap: Sassy’s Fangirl Debuts was created by Talina from Sassy and Dangerous. It’s a feature wherein we, the secret agents, help the authors dominate the bookish nation. Today I am so excited to go on with my third mission for Sassy’s Fangirl Debuts and this mission is all about writing an open letter to a debut author! I have been assigned to write a letter to: Ashley Herring Blake!

First mission: Open Letter to Lygia Day Penaflor

Hi Ashley,

It was awesome to meet someone new in the bookish world. I’m so glad I was assigned to write a letter for you. First of all, let me just tell you that we’ll be best buds. Why? You love coffee, I love coffee. You write poems, I read them. You’re a teacher, “Hi Ma’am”! Hahaha. I may sound as a new fan of you and your book but I’m really excited to spill / blurb something about it.

When I read the synopsis of your book (Suffer Love), it had me intrigued. Family problems? Complicated family relationships? Unexpected love? Fate? Yup, they caught my attention. I’m sure I’m going to read this book next year. I’m also sure that a lot of people will somehow relate with the characters of Suffer Love. I know that I’m not the only who’s excited for the release of your book. I actually am seeing a LOT of great reviews of your book from Goodreads and that makes me more excited, to be honest with you!

Well, I wouldn’t make this letter very long but please remember that I’ll always be here for you. ALWAYS. Fangirl forever!

Jasmine Pearl xx

Hadley St. Clair’s life changed the day she came home to a front door covered in slips of paper, each of them revealing the ugly truth about her father. Now as her family falls apart in the wake of his year-long affair, Hadley wants everyone-her dad most of all-to leave her alone.

Then she meets Sam Bennett, a cute new boy who inexplicably “feels like home” to Hadley. Hadley and Sam’s connection is undeniable, but Sam has a secret about his family that could ruin everything.

If you want to read the letters of the other agents, feel free to check their blogs. I know they’re awesome-sauce!
