Sometimes our hearts see things our eyes can’t.

Lily Jo McGrother, born Timothy McGrother, is a girl. But being a girl is not so easy when you look like a boy. Especially when you’re in the eighth grade.

Dunkin Dorfman, birth name Norbert Dorfman, is dealing with bipolar disorder and has just moved from the New Jersey town he’s called home for the past thirteen years. This would be hard enough, but the fact that he is also hiding from a painful secret makes it even worse.

One summer morning, Lily Jo McGrother meets Dunkin Dorfman, and their lives forever change.

*I would like to thank Penguin Random House for sending me an ARC of this book.

This doesn’t affect nor influence my review.*

Trust me when I tell you that this book was unbelievably fantastic. I thought I’m going to read something ordinary, but this one just blew me away.

First off, I haven’t read something about being a transgender. It was my first time reading something like this. And oh my guacamole, just AMAZING. This issue has been very sensitive since then, but we gotta face reality.

One day, we’ll know some people who want to be like this instead of being like that. You know what I mean. And you know what? They have the freedom to choose what they want to be. We don’t have the right to judge them nor say something stupid about their choices. We have different lives. Just like Lily, who was born as Timothy, she wants to be someone else. Someone else whom everybody can accept him as a “her”. On the other hand, Dunkin Dorfman is dealing with bipolar disorder. At first, I didn’t like his personality and such until the last few chapters of this book. You’ll know what I mean so go get your copy of this lovely baby!

The character development and plot was amazingly written by the author. I don’t know what to say anymore because I don’t know how to describe this book. It was indeed eye-opening. Donna Gephart did a wonderful job! 🙂
